The United States to formalize $420 million MCC deal proposal to TL by 2022

DILI, 23 may 2022 (TATOLI) – The United States (U.S) Presidential Delegation led by the Honorable Alice P. Albright, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challange Corporation (MCC) underscored U.S. commitment to formalizing a proposed of $420 million MCC compact to Timor-Leste in 2022.

The Statement was highlighted by the Head of the U.S. Presidential Delegation and CEO of MCC, Alice P. Albright, in the meeting with the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak at the Palace of Government Dili.

“The compact would be the largest single U.S. development contribution in the history of the U.S.-Timor-Leste bilateral relationship, In providing transformational investments in Timor-Leste’s water, sanitation and education sectors,”

The support will provide disinfected water to 429,000 residents in Dili and 64,000 residents in the surrounding areas. while through the TALENT (Teaching and Leading the Next Generation of Timorese) project, the compact will enhance the pedagogical and leadership skills of teachers and school directors, benefitting more than 957,000 Timorese, including all secondary-level education students.

In addition, the delegation also extended congratulations on behalf of President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to President José Ramos-Horta and the Timorese on the 20th anniversary of TL’s Independence and Presidential Inauguration ceremony.

“On behalf of the United States, I wish to congratulate His Excellency José Ramos-Horta on his inauguration as the President of Timor-Leste,” said Alice P. Albright, Head of the U.S. Presidential Delegation and CEO of MCC. 

“I would also like to offer my warmest congratulations to the people of Timor-Leste on the 20th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s restoration of independence. Over the past two decades, Timor-Leste has built a vibrant, resilient democracy and today stands as a beacon of democracy for the region and the world.”

The compact is designed to improve the health and skills of the Timorese people and contribute to Timor-Leste’s continued development and prosperity. 

The delegation reaffirmed U.S. support for Timor-Leste’s development priorities through the United States Agency for International Development, the Peace Corps, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s McGovern-Dole program.

At the meeting, the U.S Presidential delegation also extended congratulations on behalf of President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to President José Ramos-Horta and the Timorese on the 20th anniversary of TL’s Independence and Presidential Inauguration ceremony.

So far the U.S. Presidential Delegation also included Thomas Daley, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, a.i.; the Honorable Paloma Adams-Allen, Deputy Administrator, United States Agency for International Development; and the Honorable Curtis Ried, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs, National Security Council.
