DILI, 1 december 2022 (TATOLI)- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has supported the women entrepreneurs in Atauro focused on ocean-based Seaweed cultivation.
The Resident Representative of UNDP, Mukhtuya Altangerel told Tatoli at the STAE office in Caicoli Dili.
Altangerel said the support is implemented under the UNDP’s program designed called the blue economy concept focuses on the development of small and medium enterprises ocean-based in Timor-Leste.
“Currently, we are working on a small scale for seaweed cultivation in Atauru by providing some technical assistance of growing and drying process and also store in the warehouse,’’ UNDP Resident Representative in Timor-Leste, Munkhtuya Altangerel told TATOLI Agency at STAE office, Caioli, this thusday
Mrs. Tuya explained that the businesswomen in Atauro decided to work ocean-based for economic activity rather than land-based, so UNDP will try to scale up blue economy activity in the ocean based for the entire community living in coastal areas and they may get the income they need in the blue economy.
“It is the most practical approach as UNDP also develops the largest financial program for blue economy activities that can be contributing a lot of money to the community’s revenue without petroleum funds,”
According to Altangerel, the community in Atauro gets $100,000 in benefits from harvesting and selling the seaweeds to countries like Vietnam, and Indonesia as well as other countries.
“UNDP has provided technical assistance for 50 women who are currently cultivating seaweed. UNDP expects to reach 100 thousand women, who are living in the coastal areas. It is an easy economic activity that can give good income through blue economy activities,”
She said UNDP planned to expand this blue economy activity to all municipalities, including Oecusse and RAEOA.
