DILI, 05 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Council of Ministers, has today approved a draft decree-law on the Organic Structure of the National Maritime Authority.

The decree law was presented by the Minister of Defence, Filomeno da Paixão de Jesus, at the Council of Ministers meeting, today.

The government diploma defines, within the scope of the Maritime Authority System (SAM), the new structure, organization, operation, and competencies of the National Maritime Authority (AMN).

The AMN continues to be the direction and coordination body for operations at sea to be executed within the framework of the SAM, in compliance with the instructions defined by the Minister of Defense.

The AMN comprises the Directorate of Maritime Authority (DAM) and its central and devolved services, and the AMN Advisory Council (CCA). The AMN is supported by a direct support office, composed of military personnel and civilians, headed by a senior officer. Its composition, attributions, and functioning are approved by a ministerial diploma of the member of the government responsible for the area of defense.

“Thus, the law opens the way for the AMN to start carrying out its work to protect the Timor-Leste sea that is part of Timor-Leste’s national sovereign,” said the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, in a press conference at Government Square.
