DILI, 20 June 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) has allocated around US$100,000 this year to support the development of community-based tourism.

MoTE’s Director-General, António da Silva said that the budget will be used to finance initiatives proposed by community groups aimed at enhancing local tourism activities.

Silva said that part of the funds will also be used for capacity building and training to equip community members with skills in financial management and other areas related to community tourism. “This year, proposals must focus on cultural tourism and ecotourism, so citizens are encouraged to submit innovative ideas aligned with these themes to be eligible for funding,” he said.

Silva explained that through this initiative, the government aims to support local tourism projects that can be created, implemented, and managed by community groups or small local enterprises. “The goal is to generate income for the participants and stimulate the local economy,” he added.

It is recalled that between 2021 and 2022, the government funded the development of 18 community-based tourism sites across the country.
