Twelve Timorese Athletes Selected to Compete in Upcoming CPLP Sports Games

DILI, 03 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The Timor-Leste Athletics Federation has selected 12 athletes to represent the country at the upcoming CPLP Sports Games, scheduled to take place from July 17 to 27 in Dili.

The athletes will compete in the 100m, 200m, 1,500m, and 3,000m races, as well as the relay, long jump, and shot put events.

According to Afrânio Xavier Amaral, President of the Athletics Federation, the athletics competitions will be held in both Dili and Ermera municipality.

Amaral admitted the team will face more experienced rivals but expressed confidence in their determination to perform at their highest level

This year’s CPLP Games will feature eight sports disciplines: football, beach volleyball, taekwondo, chess, karate, basketball, tennis, and athletics.

Launched in 1992, the CPLP Sports Games held its first edition in Portugal and has since hosted more than ten editions.

The games have taken place twice in Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, and Mozambique, and once in Guinea-Bissau, Brazil, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The most recent edition was held in 2018 in São Tomé and Príncipe.
