DILI, 14 August 2025 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic José Ramos Horta has extended heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the Republic of Cape Verde in the aftermath of catastrophic floods that struck the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão.
In an official letter dated August 13, 2025, addressed to the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, His Excellency José Maria Pereira Neves, President Ramos-Horta conveyed Timor-Leste’s profound sorrow for the lives lost and the widespread destruction caused by the disaster.
“In this time of pain and suffering, Timor-Leste stands in solidarity with Cape Verde and trusts in the resilience of its civil protection institutions and its population to overcome this tragedy. May the hope and strength of the Cape Verdean people lead them to quickly overcome this adversity,” President Ramos-Horta stated.
The President affirmed Timor-Leste’s support for relief efforts and humanitarian assistance, underscoring the bonds of fraternity between the two nations.
Cape Verde has declared a state of emergency on the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão following deadly floods that killed at least nine people and displaced 1,500 residents. The declaration activates crisis funds and urgent infrastructure repairs across the Atlantic Ocean islands off the west coast of Africa.
