DILI, 04 November 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste has approved the ratification of the defence agreement between Timor-Leste and Malaysia.

The decision followed a draft presented by the Minister of Defence, Donaciano do Rosário Gomes, during the Council’s meeting at the Government Palace in Dili, on Tuesday.

“Among the main objectives of the Agreement is the strengthening of bilateral relations in military matters, namely through regular political and strategic dialogue, the sharing of information and experiences, the exchange of personnel, and technical and military training, joint exercises, and cooperation in science, technology, and the defence industry,” said in a statement.

The statement highlighted Malaysia’s long-standing role as a trusted defence partner of Timor-Leste since the restoration of the country’s independence in 2002.

The agreement reaffirms the commitment of both governments to work together in promoting peace, security, and regional stability within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which Timor-Leste is now a full member.
