DILI, 25 November 2025 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão met today in Dili with former Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe, Maria das Neves, during a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Maria das Neves said the purpose of her visit was to personally greet Xanana Gusmão.
She expressed satisfaction at being received despite the Prime Minister’s tight schedule.
Neves said the meeting was pleasant and covered several topics, including the blue economy and potential partnerships between Timor-Leste and São Tomé and Príncipe.
She noted that, despite the geographical distance between the two countries, there are many areas of possible cooperation.
Neves said both nations share interests that can support stronger collaboration. She highlighted the sea as one of the main opportunities for joint initiatives.
Maria das Neves served as Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe from 2002 to 2004 under the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe – Social Democratic Party. She was the first woman to lead the government of her country.
