DILI, 11 December 2025 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic José Ramos-Horta today held a meeting with a delegation from the Portuguese Parliament to discuss bilateral relations between the two nations, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Bairro Pite, Dili.
Portuguese Parliamentary Representative José Cesário stated that the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and Timor-Leste’s role in regional and international contexts, particularly efforts to deepen the historical and strategic ties between the two countries, with special attention to Timor-Leste’s integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
He explained that the initiative for this visit came directly from the Portuguese parliamentary group, with the objective of consolidating a partnership that has already proven to be strong and enduring.
“We are here representing the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, to express to the President our commitment to collaborate on all matters related to Timor-Leste’s objectives, its development, and its relations with Portugal. The idea for this visit came from us, as a way to strengthen cooperation,” Portuguese Deputy José Cesário said.
He emphasized that the presence of Portuguese culture and language remains a major priority for Portugal, considering it a distinctive aspect that deserves special attention.
“Cooperation is extremely important and has already been carried out intensively and actively in the sectors of security, defense, education, culture, justice, and parliamentary affairs,” he added.
Cesário highlighted the direct support provided by the Portuguese Embassy in Dili and Timor-Leste’s diplomatic mission in Lisbon, which continue to reinforce bilateral relations.
He also noted the importance of the Portuguese community living in Timor-Leste and the Timorese diaspora in Portugal, both of which play a fundamental role in strengthening ties between the two nations.
