PM Gusmão and New Zealand Ambassador to ASEAN highlight shared priorities

DILI, 19 february 2026 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão received New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Joanna Jane Anderson, at the Government Palace in Dili to strengthen bilateral cooperation and discuss shared priorities following Timor-Leste’s accession to the regional bloc.

Ambassador Anderson was accompanied by New Zealand’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Helen Tunnah.

Ambassador Joanna Jane Anderson said New Zealand has long supported Timor-Leste and wants to hear the Prime Minister’s perspective on the organization and his vision for the country, as well as how the close partners can collaborate on issues important to both nations.

Discussions highlighted key pillars of the bilateral partnership, including economic development, environmental protection, strengthening people-to-people ties, and promoting prosperity.

She said Timor-Leste and New Zealand have long been close partners across many areas, adding that both countries share priorities including economic development, environmental protection, people-to-people ties, and prosperity.

Anderson added that Gusmão values Timor-Leste’s relationship with New Zealand and expressed openness to deepening cooperation in the coming years.
