Timor-Leste assesses food reserves amid global crisis concerns

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão

DILI, 09 April 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste has reviewed its national food reserves to ensure adequate supplies amid mounting concerns over a global crisis stemming from conflicts in the Middle East, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão said Thursday.

“The government has instructed the Ministries of Agriculture and of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to assess national food reserves and determine import requirements through the end of the year,” Gusmão told reporters after his weekly meeting with President José Ramos-Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili, today.

He said it’s important to ensure the National Logistics Center maintains reserves in case of a global food crisis.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the government plans to purchase locally produced rice from farmer groups to strengthen strategic reserves while supporting domestic production.

He said that the government plans to make these reserves available to citizens at lower prices in case of an emergency.

Gusmão said rising international tensions, including conflicts involving Israel and Lebanon, as well as escalating disputes between Iran and the United States, as factors contributing to global instability.

He warned that any disruption to oil transport through strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz could affect about 20% of global distribution, with direct impacts on Asian countries, including Timor-Leste.

“This situation could influence global inflation, especially since we use the U.S. dollar. That is why we are preparing to meet national needs through the end of the year,” Gusmão added.
