DILI, 20 March 2026 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão on Friday urged the Muslim community to strengthen unity and solidarity amid growing global challenges, during an Eid Al-Fitr celebration hosted by the Embassy of Indonesia in Timor-Leste.
Speaking at the Idul Fitri ceremony, Gusmão emphasized the importance of unity, mutual respect, and compassion as the foundation for peace and national development.
“We pray that we can embrace and love one another, so that peace may be realized as the foundation for the country’s development,” he said.
The prime minister noted that his attendance at the event also aimed to honor the outgoing Indonesian ambassador to Timor-Leste, Okto Dorinus Manik, who is concluding his diplomatic mission and is expected to take up a new post in Papua New Guinea.
Gusmão also warned of a worsening international situation, pointing to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which he said could “trigger global energy and food crises.”
According to the head of government, such crises could directly affect people’s daily lives, making social cohesion and solidarity essential in overcoming these challenges.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Manik extended Eid greetings to all Muslims, including Indonesian and Timorese communities. He noted that this year’s celebration holds special significance as it coincides with other important religious observances, including Nyepi, Chinese New Year, and the Christian season of Lent.
Addressing the global context, Manik expressed concern over the escalating conflicts in the Middle East, highlighting their humanitarian and economic impacts.
He warned that rising global oil prices could lead to increases in the cost of essential goods, further straining economic conditions, and stressed the need for collective action to address these challenges.
The ambassador also underscored the importance of solidarity and mutual support as key pillars in navigating current global uncertainties.
