DILI, 29 April 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, visited four orphans who lost both their mother and father in the floods that occurred on Saturday, April 25, in the Suai Vila Administrative Post, Matai Village.
Upon his arrival, the four orphans and their relatives received President Ramos-Horta with tears in their eyes.
The Head of State visited to express his solidarity with the family and promised that a house would be built for them within the next two months.
According to the President, the situation these orphans are facing is extremely difficult.
In addition to providing a home, President Ramos-Horta committed to finding ways to support the children currently in school and pledged to help the eldest daughter find employment.
The tragedy claimed the lives of Alcino da Costa Afonso, 54, and Mariana dos Santos, 56. The couple had lived a simple life on their farm, dedicated to agriculture and raising livestock. On that fateful day, they had decided to leave their fields and return to town to attend to a family matter. However, their journey was cut short by a torrential downpour.
Caught in the sudden fury of the resulting floodwaters, the couple was unable to reach safety. Despite their best efforts to survive, they could not escape the rapidly rising deluge.
