DILI, 30 May 2026 (TATOLI) – On the sidelines of the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta held a cordial bilateral meeting with Florian Hahn, German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office that centered on deepening the cooperative relationship between Timor-Leste and Germany.
During the exchange, Minister Hahn specifically sought the Nobel Peace Laureate’s expert insights on current regional security dynamics in the Asia-Pacific and his perspectives on global conflict resolution.
In response, President Ramos-Horta reflected on his enduring personal and diplomatic ties with Germany, which date back to the 1980s.
The Head of State shared memories of working alongside numerous German colleagues over the decades and expressed profound appreciation for the German media.
The President highlighted that during Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence, German journalists played a crucial role by publishing extensive news about the occupation, which helped sustain international awareness and solidarity for the Timorese cause.
The meeting also reinforced concrete mutual commitments on the international stage.
Aligning with their shared democratic values, President Ramos-Horta reiterated Timor-Leste’s strong support for Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
In turn, Minister Hahn affirmed Germany’s continued backing for Timor-Leste as the nation actively prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029, cementing a partnership built on history, mutual respect, and a shared vision for global stability.
