Timor-Leste and Federated States of Micronesia set to formalize diplomatic ties

DILI, 03 June 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste’s government has authorized its ambassador to Australia to sign a declaration establishing diplomatic relations with the Federated States of Micronesia, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding the country’s diplomatic presence in the Pacific.

The decision grants the ambassador full powers to sign the document on behalf of the Timorese government, paving the way for the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

According to the government, the initiative is intended to formalize bilateral relations in line with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961.

The move reflects the shared commitment of Timor-Leste and the Federated States of Micronesia to strengthening friendship and expanding bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

The establishment of diplomatic relations would contribute to international peace and security while reinforcing cooperation based on the principles of sovereign equality, national independence, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

The agreement marks another step in Timor-Leste’s efforts to deepen its diplomatic engagement with countries across the Pacific region and strengthen its international partnerships.
