On 21 June 2026, the Embassy of India in Timor-Leste will join millions of people around the world in celebrating the 12th International Day of Yoga at Top Golf, Dili. Over the past decade, this annual observance has evolved into a global movement, bringing together people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds in the pursuit of health, harmony, and well-being.
Yoga is one of India’s most precious gifts to humanity. Rooted in an ancient tradition, it is much more than physical exercise. It is a holistic practice that nurtures the body, calms the mind, and promotes a balanced way of life.
The universal relevance of yoga was eloquently expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, when he described yoga as “an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition” that embodies harmony between mind and body, humanity and nature, and offers a holistic approach to health and well-being. Inspired by this vision, the United Nations adopted a resolution proclaiming 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The resolution received the unprecedented support of 177 Member States, including Timor-Leste, reflecting the broad global recognition of Yoga’s contribution to health, well-being, and harmony. Since then, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated across the world with growing enthusiasm.
The theme for this year’s observance, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the importance of maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout life. As populations around the world live longer, the focus is increasingly on ensuring that people remain healthy, active, and independent as they age.
Yoga contributes significantly to this goal. Regular practice improves flexibility, balance, strength, and mobility, while also reducing stress and promoting mental resilience. Equally important, it encourages mindfulness and emotional well-being, helping individuals lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
The significance of this theme extends to all age groups. Healthy ageing begins with healthy living. By embracing yoga as part of a daily routine, people can build habits that support lifelong wellness and enhance their quality of life at every stage.
For the people of Timor-Leste, yoga’s message resonates deeply with values of harmony, community, and respect for nature. Its simplicity and accessibility make it a powerful tool for promoting public health and well-being. The growing popularity of yoga in Timor-Leste is also a reflection of the strong cultural and people-to-people ties between our two countries.
India and Timor-Leste enjoy warm and friendly relations founded on mutual respect and cooperation. The growing interest in yoga serves as yet another bridge connecting our peoples and strengthening the bonds of friendship between our two nations.
As we mark the 12th International Day of Yoga, I warmly invite everyone in Timor-Leste to join us at Top Golf, Dili, on 21 June (7:00 – 8:00 AM). Whether you are an experienced practitioner or new to yoga, this celebration offers an opportunity to experience a timeless tradition that continues to inspire millions across the globe.
Let us come together in the spirit of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” and reaffirm our shared commitment to building healthier communities and a more harmonious future for all.
