DILI, 18 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, received the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste, Funmi Balogun, on Thursday at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.

The meeting focused on reviewing the current status of United Nations activities in the country, with particular emphasis on transforming food systems and identifying integrated approaches to increase agricultural productivity and address malnutrition in the most vulnerable municipalities.

During the meeting, the importance of mobilizing new investments for Timor-Leste’s agricultural sector was highlighted, complementing the resources already provided by the State.

The United Nations representative reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to providing impartial technical support and facilitating strategic partnerships, while seeking to engage the private sector and attract investors from the ASEAN region to promote agricultural development and strengthen the country’s food security.

Preparation for the potential threat posed by the El Niño climate phenomenon was also one of the main topics discussed. In close coordination with the Civil Protection Authority and relevant ministries, the United Nations has been supporting monitoring and planning efforts to ensure that communities maintain access to water and essential goods in the event of drought.

In this context, a further technical meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow at the initiative of the President of the Republic, with the aim of strengthening institutional coordination and mitigating the potential impacts of this climate-related emergency.
