DILI, 21 June 2026 (TATOLI) – Former Timor-Leste President and guerrilla commander Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo’ died today at the age of 71 while undergoing intensive medical treatment in Malaysia, his family announced in a statement posted on the former president’s official Facebook page.
Lú-Olo’ died at Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, where he had been receiving treatment.
The family described his death as a profound loss not only for his wife, children and relatives, but also for Fretilin, his fellow independence fighters and all those who contributed to the struggle and nation-building efforts of Timor-Leste.
“We ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time, to join us in prayer, and to honor his memory, his legacy and his dedication to the Timorese people,” the statement read.
Lú-Olo’ was one of the most prominent figures in Timor-Leste’s modern political history.
He joined the national liberation movement in 1974 and remained active throughout the 24-year Indonesian occupation, taking on various political and military responsibilities within the resistance movement.
A senior leader of the resistance, he assumed the political leadership of Fretilin’s armed struggle in 1998 following the death of resistance commander Konis Santana.
After Timor-Leste’s 1999 independence referendum, Lú-Olo’ played a central role in reorganizing Fretilin for the post-independence era.
In 2001, he was elected president of the Constituent Assembly, which was tasked with drafting the country’s constitution.
As president of the National Parliament, Lu-Olo formally proclaimed the Restoration of Independence of Timor-Leste on May 20, 2002. He served as parliamentary speaker from 2002 to 2007.
‘Lú-Olo’ later served as president of the republic from 2017 to 2022. He held a law degree from the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL).
His death marks the passing of one of the leading figures of Timor-Leste’s independence struggle and democratic transition.
Born on September 7, 1954, in Ossu, Viqueque municipality, Lu-Olo was a husband and father of four, married to Cidália Lopes Nobre Mouzinho Guterres.
