Mercy Corps and SSCP sign MoU for community based disaster risk reduction

DILI, 14 july, 2021 (TATOLI) – Mercy Crops and SSCP sign an agreement letter to implement a community based disaster risk reduction program for five years.

The memorandum understanding agreement was signed between Mercy Corps and Secretary State of Civic Protection (SSCP), with a propose is to ensure the Mercy Corps program activities that fall under the jurisdiction of SSCP and based on the government of Timor-Leste policies, it is also to strengthen partnership on close coordination and collaboration with the representatives of SSCP at the national municipal and municipalities level.

“Mercy Corps Timor-Leste has worked with Civil Protection to implement community based disaster risk reduction and largely focus in Dili, Ainaro, Ermera and Covalima municipalities and even to the both rural and urban area setting with the goal of creating disaster ready community,” The Country Director of Mercy Corps, Jules Keane told to TATOLI Agency, in Suai Room Timor Plaza, on july 14, this wednesday.

She added that Marcy Corps is a consistent partner with Civil Protection for disaster response, and working alongside with Secretary State of Civic Protection to provide critical support to meet immediate needs of disaster for affected communities.

“Disaster risk management is one of the fundamental pillars of Mercy Corps Timor-Leste country strategy and Mercy Corps is committed to continuing its partnership with civil protection in implementing comprehensive risk management interventions,” Said the country director of Mercy Crops Keane

It is most important to increase community awareness and be more comprehensive to mitigate this risk of natural disaster, especially as the impact of climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.

The secretary state for Civic Protection, Joaquim Gusmão said that SSCP is very pleased as this MoU signature is more important, and Mercy Corps show its longstanding commitment to help Timor-Leste government to help on mitigating natural disaster risk affected for the community in Dili and even in municipalities.

He added this agreement is to ensure the program implementation to provide more information on climate change and natural disaster risk to share with all people living in most risk areas. It is helping the community to fully understand the weather and contribution for disaster risk reduction.

The ceremony of Mercy Corps and Secretary State for Civic protection Sign MoU is held in Timor-Plaza, Suai Room.

This event were marked by Secretary State for Civic Protection, Joaquim Gusmão, the National Director for National Disaster Risk Management Directorate, Ismael Babo, the president of Dili municipality, Gaspar Soares, President of Institute Petroleum and Geology, President of the National Authority for water and Sanitation, Director Generals and National Directories and other representatives of International and National Agencies.
