DILI, 13 April 2026 (TATOLI) – Australian authorities have suspended search operations for Joel Asa, a Timorese national who went missing at sea on April 6 near Emerald Beach in the Coffs Harbour region, following three days of intensive search efforts.
According to the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Australia, Asa was swept away by strong currents while fishing, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving sea, air, and land search-and-rescue teams.
“Following expert advice, the search has now been suspended, and Joel is considered a missing person,” the embassy said in a statement, on Monday.
The statement read, Australian Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner, a process which may take up to nine months.
On behalf of the Timor-Leste, the embassy extend its deepest gratitude to the emergency services involved in the three-day search for Joel Asa.
“We are deeply grateful for the dedication, coordination, and professionalism shown by all teams involved. We were especially grateful to receive a briefing from police, helping us understand the scale of the operation,” read the statement. “Heartfelt thanks to the Search & Rescue Teams of Coffs Harbour.”
The Embassy expressed appreciation for the Surf Life Saving teams, which remain committed to keep watch during their regular operations.
“Thank you to everyone who worked on the water, in the air, and on the ground. Your efforts mean so much to the Timorese community,” said the embassy.
Joel Assa, 30, was reported missing at around 10:15 a.m. on April 6 after entering the water in rough conditions. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Assa, a native of Afaloicai in Viqueque municipality, was born on June 7, 1995.
He had participated in a labour mobility programme and later worked under contract with Connect Group (Rose Farm).
