Chinese Embassy and PNTL strengthen collaboration to protect Chinese businessmen and companies

DILI, 16 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The Chinese Embassy in Timor-Leste, together with the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) and representatives of Chinese companies, held a meeting with the aim of ensuring the safety of Chinese citizens doing business and living in Timor-Leste.

The aim of the meeting was to establish good coordination between the Chinese Embassy and the security authorities, in order to ensure the protection and safety of Chinese citizens doing business in the country.

China’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, said the meeting was crucial to discuss strengthening collaboration to ensure the safety and security of Chinese citizens living, working and doing business in Timor-Leste.

“In general, the security situation in Timor-Leste is going well, but we want to further strengthen our collaboration which is necessary protect and prevent crimes against Chinese citizens doing business in Timor-Leste,” Ambassador Wenli told reporters at the Chinese Embassy, in Dili, on tuesday.

She also said that the Chinese Embassy will contact the PNTL for emergency intervention when Chinese citizens find themselves in a critical situation.

The Commander General of the PNTL, Henrique da Costa, said that the exchange of views between the Chinese Embassy and the PNTL is important to protect and prevent crime against Chinese citizens in the country.

“The Chinese Embassy requested PNTL to intensify its operations at night to ensure the safety of all citizens, including Chinese living in Timor-Leste,” he said.

Chinese businesses are advised to call the emergency number (112) to notify PNTL if they experience problems or violations and are asked to install CCTV to record the events leading up to any violation in their stores and premises.

It is estimated that there are more than 20,000 Chinese citizens currently living in Timor-Leste.
