DILI, 08 October 2025 (TATOLI) – The Dili International Marathon, set for this Saturday, will carry a symbolic and political message this year. In a show of solidarity supported by President José Ramos-Horta, participants are encouraged to carry Palestinian flags or symbols under the theme “Run for Palestine.”

Organized by the Office of the President in collaboration with the Government and the Athletics Federation, the annual Dili International Marathon aims to promote health, community participation, and international tourism, attracting runners across several categories.

In a statement, President Ramos-Horta emphasized that Timor-Leste’s own independence struggle was achieved through international solidarity, and that the nation now expresses the same spirit of support for the Palestinian people.

“Our own struggle for independence was built on a foundation of international solidarity. It is in that same spirit that we now stand with the people of Palestine,” stated President Ramos-Horta. “The sight of runners carrying the Palestinian flag or wearing its colours through the streets of Dili will be a moving testament to our shared humanity and our collective hope for a just and lasting peace. The marathon is a symbol of endurance and the human spirit, and there is no more fitting way to channel that energy than towards a call for peace and solidarity.”

The President underscored that the marathon extends beyond sports, serving as a platform to promote health, unity, and universal values. This year’s edition seeks to combine athletic competition with expressions of solidarity and social justice.

The event will take place on October 11, bringing together both local and international participants. Beyond celebrating athleticism and solidarity, the marathon will also mark Timor-Leste’s integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), highlighting the role of sports as a bridge for peace and cooperation.

The program includes several race categories: the full marathon—a challenging 42.195 km course for elite and seasoned runners; the half marathon, covering 21.0975 km for endurance athletes; and the fun run, a shorter, non-competitive race for families and community members to enjoy the festive atmosphere. A para-athletics category is also included.

According to the Chief of Staff at the Presidential Office, Jesuína Gomes, this year’s event has a total budget of US$170,000, with US$100,000 directly allocated by the President and US$70,000 funded by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture in partnership with the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top ten finishers, ranging from US$200 to US$8,000.
