DILI, 28 April 2026 (TATOLI) – Former member of parliament from FRETILIN party, Marito Mota passed away at the National Hospital Guido Valadares (HNGV) on Monday at around 11:03 a.m., after suffering what medical officials believe was a sudden cardiac event.
According to the Director of Clinical Services at HNGV, the former lawmaker experienced sudden illness in the morning after complaining of stomach pain. He later collapsed and was immediately transported to the hospital.
“Upon arrival, examinations confirmed no vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, indicating that he arrived already deceased,” the hospital official said.
Despite this, emergency teams carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, including medication and chest compressions, but were unable to revive him. His death was declared shortly afterward.
Health officials said there is a strong likelihood the cause of death was a heart attack, linked to a history of hypertension and irregular treatment.
The officials also noted that the former MP did not take hypertension medication regularly, which may have contributed to the deterioration of his condition. In some cases, he added, heart attacks can present as stomach pain, which can delay recognition of symptoms.
Marito Mota served as a member of the National Parliament from 2018 to 2023.
