DILI, 26 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The House Democracy Partnership (HDP) team, led by Nick Rahall, on tuesday, met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão at the Palace of Government, in Dili.
Rahall said that the HDP’s sixth visit to Timor-Leste aims to strengthen and continue the partnership between the US and Timor-Leste.
“We had a very good conversation with him (Prime Minister Gusmão) about the bilateral relationship between the US and Timor-Leste,” Rahall told reporters after the meeting.
He said that so far the support form the HDP to Timor-Leste included technical assistance, parliamentary exchange programs and the sharing of knowledge about the legislative process in both countries.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Gusmão shared his vision for Timor-Leste’s development with the HDP team.
He also briefed the team about his vision to continue the progress Timor-Leste is making, not only in terms of democracy, human rights, and transparency but also to continue helping the people of Timor-Leste.
Gusmão expressed Timor-Leste’s commitment to continue and strengthen the bilateral relationship with the HDP which is crucial to ensure peace in the region and across the world.
The United States is proud to have supported Timor-Leste’s independence and continues to work closely with Timorese to develop robust democratic institutions and promote economic development.
This is the sixth United States Congressional visit to Timor-Leste by the House Democracy Partnership.
Since 2009, the House Democracy Partnership has supported the Timorese Parliament’s research service, funded Parliament’s library, integrated information technologies into Parliament, and encouraged greater legislative oversight and efficiency.
