DILI, 11 July 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos Horta, sworn-in Ivo Jorge Valente as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the Republic of Angola. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Dili.
Ambassador Valente brings extensive legal and diplomatic experience to his new role, having served in various high-level positions within Timor-Leste’s government, including as Minister of Justice (2015-2017) and Vice-Minister of Justice (2010-2015). His comprehensive background in law, public administration, and international affairs positions him well to advance Timor-Leste’s interests in Angola and strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Timor-Leste and Angola share deep historical bonds rooted in their struggle for national liberation and are committed to enhancing their cooperation within the framework of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). Areas of mutual interest include oil and gas sector development, regional security matters, and support for each other’s multilateral endeavors, including Timor-Leste’s ASEAN integration efforts.
The swearing-in of Ambassador Valente underscores the growing importance of Timor-Leste’s diplomatic relations with Angola, building upon the historic ties between the two Portuguese-speaking nations. The relationship has been significantly strengthened through recent diplomatic milestones, including the inauguration of Timor-Leste’s embassy in Luanda in July 2024 and the establishment of Angola’s embassy in Dili in May 2025.
