Parliament Approves Visa Waiver Agreements Between Timor-Leste and Lao DPR

DILI, 13 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament (PN) on Monday, ratified the short-stay visa waiver agreement between Timor-Leste and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).

The Visa Waiver Agreement was approved with 41 votes in favor, zero against, and zero abstentions.

The agreement provides for visa-free travel for citizens of Timor-Leste and Lao PDR when travelling to each other’s territories for a maximum period of 30 days.

“This agreement establishes visa-free travel for holders of ordinary passports, allowing entry and stays of up to 30 days,” read a statement.

The agreement aims to strengthen the good relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, as well as facilitating tourist exchanges and complying with ASEAN instruments regarding the reciprocal recognition of passports.

Last year, the Government of Timor-Leste and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR), signed a visa-free agreement for holders of official and diplomatic passports between Timor-Leste and Lao DPR.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, and his Laotian Counterpart, Saleumxay Kommasith and was witnessed by the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and his Laotian Counterpart, Sonexay Siphandone.
