DILI, 15 June 2026 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão departed for Russia on Monday to participate in the ASEAN-Russia Summit 2026, scheduled to take place from June 17 to 19 in the city of Kazan.
The summit will bring together leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to strengthen political, economic and strategic cooperation between the regional bloc and Russia.
The meeting will serve as an important platform for dialogue aimed at deepening friendship and cooperation between ASEAN and Russia.
Discussions are expected to cover a broad range of issues, including regional and global security, trade and investment, energy, education, technology, public health, connectivity, infrastructure and cultural exchanges.
The summit is also expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic ties between ASEAN and Russia, promoting shared economic growth and contributing to peace and stability across the region.
In addition to the leaders’ sessions, the agenda includes thematic discussions and roundtable meetings on cooperation between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Key topics will include efforts to expand trade and investment, accelerate digital transformation, advance artificial intelligence, enhance food security, strengthen energy and industrial cooperation, and improve transport and logistics connectivity.
Eurasian integration is expected to be one of the central themes of the summit. The concept refers to initiatives aimed at enhancing economic, political, security and infrastructure cooperation among countries across Europe and Asia.
Timor-Leste’s participation reflects its commitment to becoming more closely connected with the region. The government regards ASEAN as an important avenue for promoting economic opportunities, strengthening institutions and expanding global partnerships.
The summit comes as Timor-Leste advances its preparations for full ASEAN membership, with the government continuing to engage actively with regional and international partners to support its integration process and long-term development goals.
