DILI, 04 November 2019 (TATOLI) – There are now more sim cards registered in Timor-Leste than people in the country, according to the National Communications Authority.
ANC President João Olívio Freitas said the figure comes from customers of the three major sim card providers: Timor Telcom, Telemor and Telkomcel (Timor-Leste).
“The [number of] active clients from the three operators is 1,442,497,” Mr Freitas said. It’s not clear how many customers have registered multiple sim cards with different providers.
The figure consists of 1,187,219 registered clients, but also a further 143,617 who have been “barred” from accessing the service.
João Olívio Freitas said that’s because, as of April 1 this year, the ANC had deregistered customers with incomplete or missing identification.
And he reminded sim card vendors its up to them to create their own platform to handle the sim card registration properly, according to the regulations.
“But [for] those who doesn’t follow the rule, there will be no activation for their sim cards,” he said.
