DILI, 09 September 2020 (TATOLI)– ASEAN President has authorized Timor-leste to participate in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Activities in the future.
The decision was made after a virtual fact-finding evaluation by The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Pillars as part of the assessment of Timor-Leste’s readiness to become a member of ASEAN.
The teleconference was held at the office of Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste. Director-General for ASEAN, Milena Rangel and the Director-General Jorge Camões represented Timor-Leste during the teleconference, while Mintho represented the AEC and ASCC from Vietnam.
“The earlier activities of Socio Cultural is only important for other ASEAN members, but now Timor-Leste has opportunity to participate in Socio Cultural activities today,” General Director of ASEAN Milena Rangel told the reporters at Foreign Affairs Office.
She added that the teleconference was to establish contact between ASEAN and Timor-Leste to clarify the questions filled by Timor-Leste regarding the Socio-Cultural pillar which has submitted to ASEAN secretary at Jakarta in 2020.
“this is such a good way for us to get to know the agencies that contribute to the ASEAN Socio-Cultural pillar,” she said.
The Teleconference between TL and ASEAN was held between the 8-10 September 2020.
