DILI, 13 october 2020 (TATOLI) – President of Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo concerned about today society, especially with regard to the way girls are treated, and recalled that it is important to dignify and respect women for the future of Timor-Leste.
The concerned is made during the audience with delegation from Plan International Timor-Leste (PITL) led by the National Director Dillyana Ximenes who was accompanied by six children.
Following the notes from the office of President said, President is concerned about today’s society, especially with regard to the way girls are treated, and recalled that it is important to dignify and respect women for the future of Timor-Leste.
On 30 june this year, PITL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of the Republic to promote gender equality and combat violence and discrimination against girls and women in general.
Dillyana Ximenes PITL Director, spokes about the celebrations of International Girl’s Day in which the “Freedom online” campaign against harassment and abuse toward girls and women on social networks was launched.
Cecilia Mendonça Nascimento, represents the girls from 22 countries that joined Plan International, took the opportunity to read the open letter written in the scope of the campaign, in which social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tiktok are asked, to create mechanisms to protect girls and young women from online abuse.
Cecilia Mendonça added that, based on a study there are14,000 girls from 22 countries, 50% were victims of online harassment and 42% said they had developed a loss of confidence.
Thus, they request to President of Republic and Every one to support this campaign. Plan International is an international humanitarian organization for child-centered community development, in particular for the realization of girls’ rights regardless of age, ethnicity, race, physical, mental and socio-economic status, and has no political or religious affiliation.
PITL has been operating in Timor-Leste since 2001. It develops projects in the municipalities of Aileu and Ainaro and supports specific projects in the municipalities of Lautém, Ermera and Díli.
