In his speech, Xanana recalled that Timor-Leste has a history of hope, also highlighting the fact that, recently, the country has returned to international architecture to peacefully resolve the maritime dispute with neighboring Australia over the delimitation of maritime borders. permanent.
The note also recalls the constraints for many years that Timor-Leste has gone through in its attempt to claim its maritime territory as well as its resources, as stipulated in international law, since Australia would never yield to this and just a claim.
“At a time when the system is based on the international law, it is in danger and it is being tested as it has never been before, it is more important that we can now join together in the solidarity which is means we have to make sure all the countries are supported at this time, that nobody is left behind,” Mr Gusmao said.
It is recalled that on March 6, 2018, The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Australia and Timor-Leste signed a historic treaty established the definitive maritime borders. This treaty marked the beginning of a new era in the relationship between the two neighbors countries.
