DILI, 6 of april, 2021 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, offered condolences over the loss of lives and property caused by the natural calamity, landslide and flood in Timor-Leste recently.
“It was with deep sadness that I became aware of the tragic effects of the floods that affected a large part of the capital and caused the loss of human lives and major damage to infrastructures, including those essential to the fight against covid-19”, President of Republic of Porguese said in a statement addressed to the President of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres ‘Lú Olo’.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families, to whom I present, through your excellence on behalf of the Portuguese people and my own, heartfelt condolences, as well as the wishes for a speedy recovery for all the wounded,” he said.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, also also extended condolences over the loss of lives and solidarity with the Timorese population.
“I am writing on behalf of the United Nations Secretariat-General, through the Chief of Staff in Timor-Leste, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, to offer the deepest condolences for the tragic loss of life caused by the flash floods in Dili,” said the General Secretary of the UN.
“I ask to convey the feelings of the General Secretariat, and mine, also to the bereaved families, as well as to the Government of Timor-Leste”, Mr Guterres said.
