MAF: Companies needed to ensure products meet international standards before exporting

DILI, 15 june 2021, (TATOLI) – The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAP), Pedro dos Reis called on local companies to conduct a pretest and recheck the quality of the local products before exporting and shipping to the destination countries.

“The quality of the products is one of the most important factors to ensure the continuity of the product exportation,” Reis told reporters during the launching of Timor-Leste’s local products exportation ceremony, in Dili today.

Reis said MAP and its four National Directorates, particularly the Directorate of Quarantine and Biosecurity would put more efforts to ensure those companies that just received their food license for export would export high-quality products, saying it was not only making profits but also to promote the image of the nation and its local products abroad.

“It is a big task for us to work more in the future. You know that a few months ago, some containers of elephant foot yams, exported by local companies were rejected. Therefore, it is important to conduct a pretest and closely examine our products before exporting to other countries. You know, it’s a massive loss for such a small company,” said Reis.

At the same place, the Ambassador of Thailand to Timor-Leste, Ekapol Poolpipat said that food processing and packing were important to ensure the high quality of any products to be exported.

“I have discussed with the Timorese Authorities that the Thai government is committed to cooperating with the Timorese sides to sharing information, knowledge, and innovation regarding food safety standards and food processing. We will collaborate with the Timorese authorities to develop this kind of cooperation,” Poolpipat said.

Several local food product items were exhibited at the launching local food promotion and exportation ceremony – elephant foot yams, cloves, coffee, etc.
