DILI, 21 june 2021 (TATOLI)– The United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) and the Press Council signed an agreement on the production of a manual on violence against women and children for the training of journalists in Timor-Leste.
The representative of UNDP Residents in Timor-Leste, Lazima Onta-Bhatta, stated that the manual will help journalists to better cover the area of violence against women and children with the Spotlight program initiative.
The objective of the partnership is to provide equal right for the men and women and to promote the gender equality in Timor-Leste. The intention for the manual production is to facility the journalists training in the future.
“The UNDP and Press council is working together to develop partnership activities in Timor-Leste. We are pleased to work with partners particularly Press Council to raise the capacity of journalists in the coverage area based on violence against women and children,” The representative of UNDP Residents in Timor-Leste, Lazima Onta-Bhatta told Tatoli journalist, at Press Council Office, in Santa Cruz, this monday.
To increase the capacity of Timor-Leste journalists for the news coverage and news writing skill, the Press Council will produce a guidance books to help journalists.
The Press Council has a responsibility to produce a manual book to guide journalists in the future,” She said.
United Nation Development Program (UNDP) will provide US$50,000 for the production of a manual book to help journalist fully understand of violence against women and children.
The Executive Director of the Press Council (PC), Rigoberto Monteiro, said that UNDP and PC signed an agreement to produce the manual to train journalists in the area of violence against women and children.
“I hope that UNDP’s contribution can support the Government policy on preventing violence against women and children,” he said.
The president of the Press Council, Virgílio Guterres said that the agreement is to guarantee the production of the manual by the PC so that journalists can cover potential issues about the presence of women in society.
