State assets must be used responsibly

DILI, 24 june  2021 (TATOLI) – Commissioner for Civil Service for Disciplines, António Freitas said the role of inspectors is very crucial to save the state assets from the abuse of civil servants.

He added that state assets such as vehicles, motorbikes, computers, laptops and office equipment can be used by everyone but must be used responsibly.

“We see that state assets such as motorbike vehicles, air conditioners, and office equipment in every government institution must be available in order to facilitate staff to ensure good governance but must be responsible,” said Freitas to Journalist of TATOLI News Agency at the Novo Turismo on thursday.

He said the seminar with the topic “Saving State Assets through the Inspectors to ensure good governance,” is a very crucial role because with the seminar investigators at the Ministry of Higher Education, Art and Culture must immediately work hard to save state assets that have been corrupted by irresponsible people.

Based on observations from the Civil Service Commissioner, many employees are naughty, for example there are employees who deliberately manipulate data, damage vehicles, motorbikes, computers in order to quickly auction it, so they can buy it cheaply, our team found this obscene thing.

Therefore, the Commissioner of Public Servant of Timor-Leste urges the inspectors at the Ministry of Higher Education, Art and the Culture to be brave in exposing civil servants, especially directors and other officials who are naughty to be reported to the Anti-Corruption Commission according to decree law number 8/2003 for further investigation details if proven must be tried in the realm of law.

Freitas encourages the inspectors, especially audit inspectors at the Ministry of Higher Education, Arts and Culture, to monitor all existing state assets, because the Ministry of Education does not want the case of misuse of 16 vehicles donated by the United Nations to the Ministry of Education to happen again in future.

The case of smuggling 16 vehicles that were privatized by individuals in the Ministry of Education is very fatal because 1 person can get 3 vehicles but this case is already registered at the Corruption Commission and will soon be tried in the Dili District Court.

Freitas explained that we don’t want a case like this to happen again, therefore we hope that the investigators at this Ministry can work effectively to save state assets so that Timor-Leste can implement good governance in the future.
