WVTL: Emergency responses prioritize Children, women and disability person on flood devastating

DILI, 09 july 2021 (TATOLI)- The Non-Governmental Organization World Vision Timor-Leste (WVTL) focuses the emergency reliefs on to all victims, specially for children, women and disabilities people that were affected by torrential rain last april.

Children, disability people and pregnant women most suffer due to the risk of natural disasters.

According to WVTL’s data, 2.786 houses and 14.523 people were affected by floods. The number includes pregnant women, children and disability people.

“WVTL provided emergency reliefs to the victims of natural disasters on april 4 with basic needs responses composed of food items such as rice, cooking oil, noodle, biscuits, milk, fish can, and hygiene kits, water thanks and others. This support is prioritized in Dili as natural disasters cause huge damages for people properties and even lots of basic needs. However the emergency response also distributed all the victims in other municipalities,” The Operational Manager, Humbelino Pereira told the TATOLI Agency in His office in Bidau Mota Klaran, this Thursday.

He added that World Vision is partnering with the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, and distributing humanitarian assistance to all victims.

To ensure all affected children are not in a traumatic situation, WVTL distributed some children’s toys while staying in shelters. These children materials to ensure all children can play to diminish the calamity situation. Pregnant women are able to access health care and disability people can access some safety places in evacuation centers.

“Our program is a priority to children, so we have to distribute toys to children and help them forget about the calamity”, Mr. Pereira underlined.

He added that WVTL also established ten water tanks to help those affected by flooding in some areas such as Becora, Bairro Pite, among others.

World Vision considers data tracking is one of the challenges for distribution of food items. It is coordinating with the Secretary State of Civic Protection to ensure all numbers are correct. The distribution of emergency reliefs is ongoing and will end in September this year.

The funds are provided by the Government of Start Fund, Canadian humanitarian assistance fund, New Zealand’s Embassy in Timor-Leste, Nova Zealand Government through, Foreign Affairs ministry, USAID, World Vision Australia and among others.

The total fund is offered on an emergency assistance amount of $.1.1 million.

Mr. Humbelino Pereira calls on all people to be alerted to natural disasters, it might happen without people’s awareness. The government is always alerting on natural disasters through the electronic media to help people to avoid huge damages.
