MAP to train 54 young Timorese to become fishing vessel crews

DILI, 10 july 2021 (TATOLI) – The Directorate General of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAP) would facilitate training for 54 young Timorese to become Fishing Vessel Crews, following MAP’s plan to buy two fishing vessels in the future.

Previously, on june 23, the Council Of Ministers had decided to open public tenders for the acquisition of the two fishing vessels in the near future.

“This year the government is truly supporting MAP, especially the department of fisheries to develop the nation’s fishery sector,” Acácio Guterres, the General Director of the Fisheries told TATOLI at MAP’s hall in Dili, on friday.

Guterres informed that the aim of the purchasing the fishing vessels was to increase the quantity of fish in the country, saying therefore 54 crews were needed to work in the two fishing vessels with the 250 Gross Tonnage (GT): “So, 27 crews will work in each of the two vessels.”

“Once the tender for the acquisition of the vessels was carried out, then MAP would coordinate with the the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE) to recruit young Timorese people to have a six-month training to be working in these two vessels, you know 250 GT is a pretty big capacity,” said Guterres.

Guterres emphasized that to work in the two fishing vessels; the crew members must have really good skills and experts in the area: “So, they need to meet certain requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Labor Organization (ILO) in order to be awarded the fishing certificate.
