International Youth Day: Manufahi Authority organizes speech competition

DILI, 10 august 2021 (TATOLI) – The Authority of the Manufahi Municipality organizes a-one day speech competition for high school students in Manufahi Municipality to commemorate the International Youth Day on August 12, with the theme: ‘Transforming food systems, and youth innovation for human and planetary health.’

The contestants of the speech competition are required to present t in Portuguese and English language.

The President of the Organizing Committee, Carmo da Costa said US$ 7.500 was supported by the Secretary of the State of Youth and Sport (SEJD) to realize the competition.

“Most of the contestants of the competition are high school students. They are from six highs schools in Manufahi. So, we have three students compete in the Portuguese language, while six others were competing in the English Language,” Costa told reporters in Manufahi, today.

At the same place, the State Secretary of Youth and Sport, Abrão Saldanha said that the speech competition was important for students to develop their public speaking skills and critical thinking.

“Young people pray a crucial role in combating malnutrition and ensuring food security of the country. As young people, we need to create solutions for our own problems. You know, 75 percent of Timor-Leste’s population are young people. For instance, a young man in Ermera created job opportunities for more than 120 people in his village, and making up to US$ 400.000 every month,” said Saldanha.

In addition, the President of the Authority of Manufahi Municipality, Arantes Isaac Sarmento said that public speaking was important to prepare the young people to be good leaders of the nation.

“Standing and delivering a speech in front of audiences is something that we need to have a good preparation. Particularly, delivering speeches in Portuguese and English language is something that we need to keep up to develop and prepare our young people for the future,” said Sarmento.
