COVID-19 update: TL records four deaths, 281 infections

DILI, 21 august 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste, today, reports four deaths, 281 new cases, 71 recoveries, and the active cases were 3.088.

Of the new cases, 212 were detected in Dili, while the rest were identified in the municipalities, including 19 in Covalima, 16 in Manatuto, 15 in Baucau, 13 in Manufahi, two each in Ainaro and Bobonaro, and one each in RAEOA and Viqueque.

The spokesperson of SIJK, Dr. Rui Maria de Araujo said of today’s cases, 30.6 percent were symptomatic.

He said of today’s cases, 201 were between the ages of 12 and 59, including 66 cases under 20 and 14 elderly persons over 60. These new cases are made up of 176 men and 105 women.

Araujo informed that 61 Covid-19 cases had been admitted to Vera Cruz Isolation Center, with 13 people in critical condition, three of whom required ventilation.

In the last 24 hours, the National Health Laboratory (LNS) has performed 512 PCR tests, including nine sentinel surveillance tests, 241 through contact tracing, 20 via random screening, 128 were carried out following the request for travel authorization out of capital Dili, and 30 in quarantines.

Today, SIJK registered four deaths in Timor-Leste.

The first deceased was a woman in his 70s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on august 20 and had been admitted to Lahane Hospital for intensive treatment. She passed away last night at around 10 pm local time due to multiple organ failures.

The second deceased was a man in his 70s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on august 20 and had been under intensive treatment at Vera Cruz Isolation Center (VCIC). He passed away last night at around 10.45 pm local time due to multiple organ failures.

Another deceased was a woman in his 30s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on august 11 and had been under intensive treatment at VCIC. She passed away today at around 3 am local time due to multiple organ failures.

The fourth deceased was a man in his 40s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on august 21 and had been admitted to Guido Valadares National Hospital. He passed away today at around 11.45 am local time due to pulmonary embolism.

The evolution of the COVID-19 in Timor-Leste, the incidence rate of coronavirus is, on average, in the last week, of 16.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants, while in Dili 43.3, Manufahi 20.0, RAEOA 13.3, Covalima 12.6, Baucau 8.7, Manatuto 7.5, Ainaro 6.5, and Ermera and Liquica 4.2.

The SIJK kept calling on communities to practice the health and safety guidelines recommended by the Ministry of Health and the WHO to continue combating the spread of the virus as the SIJK’s records showed cases are again mounted in Dili, Ermera, and several municipalities.

There has been a total of 13.951 lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Timor-Leste, with 10.847 recoveries, active cases were 3.088 and 46 deaths, according to SIJK’s data.

In Timor-Leste, of the 754.864 eligible groups, 48.0 percent had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 21.4 percent have also received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Delta Variant

Timor-Leste reports local transmission of the Delta variant in Dili and Ermera.

“Based on the test result of the 45 samples sending for further testing at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and immunity, on august 11, in Melbourne, Australia, indicated that 37 positive cases were infected with the Delta variant, consisting of 22 cases in Dili, and 15 others from Ermera municipality,” said Araujo.

Health authorities warned that there had been already a presence of community transmission of the Delta variant, calling on communities to get vaccinated with Covid1-9 vaccines and practicing the health protocols.

He added the Delta variant may have spread to other municipalities, where Covid-19 cases were mounted recently.
