TLYP discuss problems facing by young people in TL

DILI, 24 august 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste Youth Parliament (TLYP) organizes a two-day plenary session to discuss the issues and problems facing by young people in Timor-Leste.

Of the 132 members of the youth parliament, 119 were present at the two-day plenary session at the Palace of Nobre, in Lahane, Dili, today.

Five general topics around problems facing youth will be discussed during the two-day plenary session – youth and education, youth and healthy lifestyle, youth employment opportunities, civic participation, and crime and violence.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day plenary session, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport (SEJD), Abrão Saldanha urged the TLYP members to use the opportunity wisely to improve themselves: “They are the future leaders of the nation, therefore, they need to learn how to lead themselves, which will help them to finds solutions for their problems.”

“Currently, we provided the training on Public Speaking, State Budget Cycle (OJE), the Competence of the Sovereign Organs of the State, Leadership Skills, and so on. These young people will become the agent of change to bring changes to the society,” Saldanha made the comments, at the Palace of Nobre, in Dili, today.

At the same place, UNICEF Representative in Timor-Leste, Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani said the UNICEF is proud to be part of the establishment of the TLYP in 2009.

He said UNICEF will continue to support TLYP members through various training, hand in hand with the SEJD,” said Durrani.

“The TLYP members get training every year. We felt that there was a need to have a standard curriculum in place on different topics. It will help them in critical thinking on different issues around education and all the needs and challenges that facing their municipalities. Establishing a proper curriculum will help systematic training for these members every year,” said Durrani.

In addition, the Coordinator of the Organizing Committee of the Plenary Session, Andre Jose Paulo informed that after the discussion, the approved recommendations will be presented to the government to consider in the next General State Budget discussion.

“Through this two-day plenary session, TLYP will find solutions for the problems and difficulties facing young people in Timor-Leste,” said Paulo.

The plenary session was realized by SEJD to give space for TLYP to identify and discuss the difficulties and problems facing young Timorese.

The two-day plenary session was chaired by Fladimar Moruk Barique, the President of the TLYP.
