MESSK to suspend teaching activities for universities across Dili

DILI, 25 august 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MESSK) will suspend the teaching and learning activities of the universities across the country, following the decision of the Council of Ministers to re-impose general mandatory confinement in Dili.

“MESSK will issue a circular letter, demanding all universities across Dili to halt the teaching and learning activities. Regarding the duration of the suspension of the teaching activities is dependent on the mandatory home confinement and the epidemiological situation in the country,” The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture, Longuinhos dos Santos told reporters after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, at Governmental Palace, on wednesday.

“During the general mandatory confinement, universities  will not be allowed to carry out the teaching and learning process,” he said.

Santos informed that MESSK’s decision on halting the teaching and learning activities of the universities was made after receiving a notification letter from the Ministry of Health: “Today, I receive a notification letter from the Health Minister, requesting MESSK to suspend the activities of the higher education institutions in Capital Dili, to contribute for combating the Covid-19 and the Delta variant.”

MESSK halted the teaching and learning activities following the resumption of classes for 22 days, since august 9 2021.

At the press conference, today, at the Governmental Palace, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães said that the restrictions of the 7-day mandatory home confinement included a ban on carrying out educational activities at universities.

Santos added due to the suspension of the teaching and learning activities, the graduation ceremony of the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL) also will be postponed.
