Embassy Timor-Leste in Japan Approaches Economiy Diplomacy

DILI, 31 august 2021 (TATOLI)– Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Japan, Ilídio Ximenes da Costa, made a courtesy visit to Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) office to discuss economic diplomacy and promote investments between the two countries in the sector of tourism, agriculture, fishing and training of human resources, reveals the communiqué that Tatoli had access to today.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss investment opportunities in the fishing sector, plastic recycling and the possibility of exporting vanilla to Japan,” Ambassador Ilidio Ximenes statement released by the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Japan.

Ambassador added that this discussion aims to continue the meeting on June 29, 2021, between the representatives of the Timorese Embassy – the First Secretary, Júlio Martins, and the Senior Assistant, Misako Nakamura – and the representative of JETRO.

According to the report, another meeting had taken place on October 9, 2020 between Ambassador Ilídio Ximenes da Costa – accompanied by his advisor, Nuno Marques Alves, and Senior Assistant, Nakamura – and the President and Executive Director (CEO) from JETRO, Nobuhiko Sasaki, Vice President, Hironobu Kitagawa, Senior Director of the Global Strategic Planning Department, Ayako Hashimoto, and Department Head of the Southeast Asia Office and Global Strategic Development Team, Yuito Miyamoto.

In addition, on July 12, 2021, JETRO’s Vice President, Hironobu Kitagawa, accompanied by the Vice President of the Sustainable Associative Economy Development Institute (IDEAS), Mayumi Murayama, the Director of the Division’s Research Operations Department of Exchange and Training, Yasuyo Sakaguchi, and the Senior Director of the Department of Global Strategic Planning (Southeast Asia), Ayako Hashimoto, made a courtesy visit to the embassy of Timor-Leste to meet with Ambassador Ilídio Ximenes da Costa.

The note reveals that, during the meeting, Hironobu Kitagawa shared his experience about the assistance that the organization has offered to other countries in terms of economic development through investments and training of human resources.

The ambassador said that, as a result of the meeting, JETRO, through the IDEAS Training Program, awarded a scholarship to an official of TradeInvest Timor-Leste, the Director of External and Commercial Relations, Roberto Lai, to participate in the training that will be held. from September 1, 2021 to January 30, 2022.

In addition, the embassy of Timor-Leste in Japan and JETRO plan to hold a seminar on business and investment opportunities in Timor-Leste, which will be attended by investors from Japan and other countries.
