PM Gusmão heads to Australia for Garma Festival 2026
DÍLI, 31 July 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão departed for Australia on Friday to participate in the Garma Festival 2026, one of the country’s largest Indigenous cultural gatherings, taking place from Friday, 31 July to Monday, 3 August 2026 at Gulkula on the Gove Peninsula in remote north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.
Gusmão’s participation comes following an official invitation from the Yothu Yindi Foundation (YYF), the organisation that hosts the annual festival.
The Garma Festival is widely recognised as Australia’s premier Indigenous cultural event, celebrating the traditions, knowledge systems and heritage of Aboriginal communities while creating opportunities to strengthen relationships among Indigenous peoples from Australia, Timor-Leste and other Pacific nations.
Gusmão will participate as a keynote speaker and guest of honour at a cultural gathering attended by Indigenous leaders, community representatives and other invited guests.
Organised by the YYF, Garma 2026 will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Yolngu people through traditional music, dance, storytelling, ceremonies and the exchange of ancestral knowledge.
The festival also provides a space for communities, families, cultural leaders, artists, young people, government representatives, academics and private sector stakeholders to engage in dialogue and cultural exchange.
The event’s central mission is to protect, promote and pass on Yolngu cultural traditions and knowledge systems to future generations while ensuring their continued recognition and preservation.
Over the years, Garma has developed into a major platform for discussions on Indigenous culture, reconciliation, leadership and cooperation, attracting participants from across Australia and internationally.
