DILI, 14 october 2021 (TATOLI) – Minister of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS), Armindo Maia has called on all private schools to allow students to sit for the exams despite outstanding fees.
“MoEYS will not intervene in the decision of the private school fee. I just want to call on all private schools across the country to give tolerances by allowing those students who haven’t completed the payment of schools fee to write the exams,” Maia told reporters at the Palace of Government, in Dili, on wednesday.
Maia said children are the nation’s future: “Therefore, private schools need to ensure students sit for exams as it is important for their future.”
“The private schools cannot ban the student from writing exams due to outstanding fees. This is not the right thing to do and it is a concern for us,” said Maia.
The face-to-face learning was halted from january to september 2021, due to the state of emergency, sanitary fence, and mandatory confinement imposed by the government. However, some private schools in Dili kept insisting the students pay the school fees.
Currently, around 118 schools in Dili are permitted to resume face-to-face learning.
