MTCI-Mercy Corps strengthens the plastic recycling industry

DILI, 16 december 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry (MTCI) and the Non-Governmental Organization Mercy Corps signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the plastic recycling industry.

The signing of the agreement is a collaboration with small companies in the field of recycling plastic waste, to be transformed into useful products.

The MTCI Minister, José Lucas do Carmo da Silva said the aim of this agreement is also to make use of the waste and help create a clean environment and healthy environment in the city.

” The Rrecycling also follows Government policies, particularly zero plastic and tourism,” said CarRecyclingol, Dili.

José Lucas highlighted that Mercy Corps is also strengthening its technical support with experts who will work with Timorese to improve their professional competence in recycling.

Mercy Corps Country Director Jules Keanea in turn said this collaboration is intended to support the recycling business to protect nature and the ocean.

Jules Keanea stated that the organization is working with the company Caltech on plastic waste collection to turn it into new products.

“The garbage is transformed into new products, such as bricks, toys, earrings, and others,” he said.

The program is funded by the European Union, in collaboration with the private sector, civil society, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Korean Agency for International Cooperation (KOICA), as well as working with companies such as Caltech and Heineken, as well as Mercy Corps, to address the plastic waste problem.
