DILI, december 23, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Embassy of Japan has provided US$50,000 for the training of journalists in political and election reporting.
This program will be implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Press Council (CI), through the signing of the agreement for the implementation of the project “Covid Resilient Elections in Timor-Leste” (CORE-TL).
Deputy Head of Mission of the Japanese Embassy in Timor-Leste, Kazumi Yamada explained, the support aims to help voters get informed and make good choices.
UNDP Representative Munkhtuya Antagerel said, given the crisis caused by COVID-19 and access to information is an important element for a successful and safe election.
“Media is the fourth pillar of democracy. UNDP, in partnership with Government entities, supports the training of journalists”, said the UNDP representative, in the context of signing the agreement, in Kintál Boot, Dili.
Journalists will receive training in peace journalism, inclusive politics, responsible reporting, and resilience in the time of COVID-19. This is intended to provide the public access to the perspectives of different political parties through the media and adequate information.
Antagerel also underlined that UNDP and IC will develop a manual for journalistic coverage of elections in the country.
IC’s Executive Director, Rigoberto Monteiro, explained that the guidelines prepared by the two entities will address election reporting issues and mechanisms for self-regulating specific issues, such as gender equality and the environment.
He believes that the manual will help journalists to prevent conflict during campaigns and elections.
He also thanked UNDP for training and financial support from the Japanese people for the CORE-TL project.
