MoEYS and Partners distribute food items to 40 schools in four municipalities

DILI, 7 january, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) together with Care International and the United States Embassy in Dili distributed food items to 40 schools in four municipalities.

Country Director of Care international in Timor-Leste, Peter good fellows said in Care’s view, HAtutan program is the most vital program to ensure all children in Timor-Leste can consume nutritious food, said Care, therefore, focused on the Hatutan program by coordinating with MOEYS .

“This program helps the students to get good health and focus on their studies,” Peter’s good fellows in his remarks at the HATUTAN warehouse, Comoros, today.

Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Atoninho Pires thanked the partners, the US, and Care International for establishing the “Hatutan” program that contributes to the school feeding program in the country.

“I appreciate the support from Care International and the U.S. Embassy to provide nutritious food items for the school feeding program,” said Pires.

The items consist of 160 tons of rice, red beans, and cooking oil that will be distributed to schools during the first period of January to March, and will benefit around 89,000 students in 40 schools.

US Embassy Charge D’Affaires Tom Daley said the US is committed to supporting Timor-Leste to improve its Education, Nutrition, and Health.

The US has provided 26 million USD to develop education, nutrition, and health in Timor-Leste. of the total amount $79,000 was allocated for the school feeding program in 2021.

“We appreciate the hard work of Care International and MoEYS in implementing a school feeding program for students across the country,”

“All Timorese children have the right to live a healthy life. When they are strong and fit they will focus on studying. They will get a good education and have a bright future,” He added.
