President Lú Olo has set March 19 as the date of Timor-Leste’s 2022 Presidential Election

DILI, 15 january 2022 (TATOLI)– The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres ‘Lú Olo”, has set march 19 as the date of Timor-Leste’s 2022 Presidential election.

The statement released by the office of the President highlighted article 12 of n. 2 Republic President Act, the second round of the election will be held if no candidates fulfilled the number of the vote which is 50%+1.

“If no candidate obtains 50% + 1 (half with one more vote) of the number of valid votes in the election concerned, we will conduct a second round within 30 days after the first election, following article 12 of n. 2, Republican Presidential Election Act. Therefore, there is no need to set another date for the second round of the election,” The statement said.

The statement also highlighted that the Head of State has held consultations on this election process with the Government, political parties with parliamentary seats, the General Elections Commission (CNE), and the Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration (STAE).

Paragraph c) of Article 89 of the Timor-Leste Republic Constitution offers the power to the President of the Republic to set the dates for presidential and legislative elections.

Article 12, no. 1, Law no. 7/2006, 26 December (The Republican Presidential Election Law), with the necessary amendments, stipulates that before the date for the election is set, it is required for the President to hear from the Government and the politics of the parties sitting in the National Parliament.
