DILI, 24 january 2022 (TATOLI) – The Timor-Leste National Parliament unanimously approved a vote of condolence to shares thoughts and prayers for Tonga tsunami victims following the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano.
“The vote of condolences was approved with 53 votes in favor, zero against, and zero abstentions. Therefore, this vote of condolences is approved at the National Parliament,” the president of the National Parliament, Aniceto Longuinhos Guterres Lopes, made the announcement, on monday.
MP Veneranda Lemos from the CNRT party said that the violent eruption that took place on january 15th caused many people to lose their houses and belongings.
“Some people lost their lives, while various materials and buildings were damaged and the majority of the population was left without access to telecommunications,” she said.
Lemos recalled that when Timor-Leste was in a difficult situation, Tonga always expressed its solidarity.
“We, therefore, must show our solidarity with the people of Tonga”, she stressed.
At least three people have died in Tonga following the massive volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami wave that hit over the weekend, UN reported.
According to a Tongan Government press release on tuesday (18/01), the three fatalities are a British national, and two Tongan nationals.
