Eye disability need Braille templates to vote the Presidential Election in Timor–Leste

DILI, 09 february 2022 (TATOLI) – Director of Vision Impairment in Timor – Leste (AHDMTL), Gaspar Afonso said the eye disability need a Braille letter template to vote in the Presidential election which will be held on 19 March 2022.

“We need a braille letter template to vote the presidential candidates, we do not agree to be accompanied by the family, officers, to inspire us in voting because sometimes they are dishonest to vote the presidential candidates, which every eye disability person wishes because we cannot see it,” ‘Afonso told TATOLI at the office of AHDMTL, Manleuna, Dili today.

ADHMTL recommends to the Government through the National Electoral Commission and the Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration (STAE) to prepare a braille letter template at every polling station in order to facilitate the vision impairment in Timor – Leste to vote in a fair, transparent, secret and honest election according to the conscience of every voter.

“ADHMTL recommended to the government through CNE and STAE to provide braille letter templates at each ballot to ensure the fair, transparent, free and confidential presidential elections in accordance with the conscience of each voter, ‘said Afonso

Afonso explained that the braille letter template is not expensive, therefore CNE and STAE can provide it to help eye disability to participate in the presidential elections maximally.

Previously, the President of CNE, Jose Belo explained that eye disability can be accompanied by their families or election officials from STAE to vote based on the aspirations of eye disabilities in Timor – Leste.

Eye disability, have their own way to make writing with embossed letters or commonly called Brille. In making braille writing there are special tools needed, these tools are a Reglet and a Stylus.

The reglet itself is a rectangular tool like a ruler, but there are special holes for printing braille writing. The reglet has two sides that can be opened and closed like a laptop to clamp the paper before it is punched. While the stylus is a special needle to pierce the paper following the pattern of regret.

Based on AHDMTL ‘s data, from 2016, recorded more than 14,000 visually impaired persons who will participate in the presidential election which will be held on 19 March in Timor – Leste.
